The Healing Stones of Hawaii
Keanianileihuaokalani - The Healing Blood Stone of Wai’ihiawa (Wahiawa)
Polynesians have a deep sense of spirituality which is till quite strong in places because the history of Hawaii is fairly recent, 800 years or so. It’s position on ancient trade routes made it a popular destination even back then, the first arrivals were Polynesians who brought with them their dogs, pigs, chickens and plants to propagate for food. Later on, people from other races arrived to do trade and to set up industry. Today Hawaii is a melting pot of these races of people and spotting a full-blooded Hawaiian can sometimes be difficult. Nevertheless the spiritual energy of those who came before is still a live and well in Hawaii and can be found in various places throughout the islands.
Because there is no written history of Hawaiian origins or practices you will often find conflicting stories about some of the artifacts and sites which have been identified. A leaflet found at the site of these healing stones says that the township of Wahiawa is incorrectly spelled and should be Wai’ihiawa. Other information gleaned about these stones says that they were not originally in Wahiawa but closer to the Birthing Stone site Ku Kani Loko which is not that far away.
What is obvious when you arrive at the site is that the stones are encased in a rather tasteless marble house, possibility a well intentioned act to help protect the stones, but in Hawaiian history such sacred things were always open to the elements and did not need to be mounted or enclosed by anything which might restrict their powers. The leaflet also said that these stones needed to be washed by the evening rains to cleanse them, as they have a roof over them now this does not happen naturally and likely the carers of the site who place the fresh flower lei’s most likely give the stones their rainwater cleansing from time to time. It was sad to see them imprisoned in this way but I did discover that this did not detract from their energy.

The township of Wahiawa had rather bleak energy, I felt that there was some kind of futility about the place and did not feel comfortable at all. As I approached the stones and went into the marble structure which housed them I did not feel any special energy, it seemed rather flat. I touched the stone on my right as I faced the stones from the entrance but felt nothing. I then went to the stone on the left and put my hand on it and closed my eyes. I could feel grounding energy entering my base chakra, it was strong but not overpowering, I guess it was healing more than anything. I then touched the smaller stone in the centre and immediately felt a fluttering of happiness in my solar plexus, this was fun energy and I felt happy. I returned to the first stone and tried again and when I closed my eyes I was aware of subtle energy entering my crown chakra.
I felt quite contented and the feelings were similar to those that I had after visiting Ku kani loko, kind of peaceful with a cosmic smile on my face. I do hope that one day these stones are set free to be open to the elements, their energy and power is amazing and I was glad to have met them.
Stop Press: An article appeared in an Hawaiian Newspaper in June 2010 saying the stone had been moved. Apparently some people jackhammered the stones loose and took them away where they are resting. The people who did this claimed that the rocks were once one and it was not a healing stone. I felt the energy of these stones, they were very powerful and whether they were healing or not that have some spiritual significance which I doubt human intervention will diminish. The Healing Stones and The Stone of Life – Waikiki
Na Pohaku Olakapaemahu A Kapuni
The legend of the stones says that four Kahuna - powerful healers from Tahiti came to Hawaii. Their names were Kapaemahu, Kahaloa, Kapuni, and Kihohi. These healers lived in the Ulukou heiau which is a religious compound or site. When these Kahuna wished to return home they asked the people to erect four monuments made of bell stone. Bellstones are a basalt stone and when struck make a ringing sound that can be heard from a great distance, Bellstones were rung when royal births had occurred too, it was a way of letting people know an event had taken place. The Tahitian healers were said to have transferred their spiritual healing power to the stones so that the stones could continue to heal in their absence.
The legend on the plaque with the stones says that The Kahunas requested that two stones be placed at Ulukou, where they lived and two stones be placed at the people’s favourite bathing place. There are conflicting stories about how they came to be together in the Kuhio beach area in the present day.

Like many other sites and monuments the stones were forgotten and, when progress called, a bowling alley was built on the spot so the stones were buried. When the bowling alley was torn down in the 1960’s the stones re emerged and people used to them sit on or hang their towels on.
In 1997 the stones were raised on a platform and a fence built around them and that is how you see them today. As part of the project Tahitians donated another stone which they called Ta ahu ea which means the life.

The Healing Stones and The Stone of Life are located next to the Waikiki Police substation and the Waikiki surfboard racks. You cannot get close to them without climbing the fence so I was unable to test their energies individually which is a shame but I will say that I loved Waikiki, I usually hate crowded, commercial places but underneath it all Waikiki had the nicest energy and I felt very welcome and happy there. It was a strong and positive energy that existed despite all the concrete. © 2009
